Picture of the Day 26.01.2016
Did you know that the Milford Sound is actually the rainiest place in the whole world? Well I just experienced it it first hand. The landscape here is incredible: Beautiful mountain ranges and fjords covered in green rainforests and of course the intensely blue water. At least that's what they told my, I mostly just starred into a white nothing. But it was all bad and Milford actually has something very equally unique and beautiful to over when it rains: Hundreds and hundreds of waterfalls coming down the fjords everywhere. While I would have loved to see all the mountains and have perfect sunshine, the waterfalls were actually quite a good compensation and I still managed to get a few good photos. But that wasn't all the adventure for today. To get to the Milford Sounds you have to drive through the 4th longest tunnel in the world. It's a very simple and dark tunnel build in the 1940s called the Homer Tunnel. The men who worked on this tunnel lived in a place called Gunns Camp close by and guess where I stayed the night. It was a great place, it changed much in the last 70 years but that's why it's so cool. We had a wood-oven in our cabin and there was electricity only from 6pm-10pm and of course no WiFi or cellphones. A fun night of the beaten path just the way I like it.
